The Breakers, Cornelius Vanderbilt's costly summer residence at Ochre Point Newport, burned Friday afternoon. Vanderbilt discovered the blaze around 4 30 p m and despite an alarm the villa and its contents were totally destroyed within two hours.
Monday November 28 reports William Miller a farmer robbed and murdered by footpads while giving his killers a ride between home and Lawrence Kansas. The assailants obtained 35. A mounted masked highwayman has terrorized Lake View with three daylight robberies. Victims include grocer Louis Roeser on Racine Avenue and Peter Olsen. Joseph Hanley reported a hold up near Argyle Park. Police chased the horseman but could not capture him.
President Higinbotham urges Congress to repeal the Sunday closing clause of the World’s Fair bill. He cites poll results from 6,000 postal cards showing a large majority oppose Sunday closure and argues open gates allow religious services by eminent clergymen at the exposition grounds.
