A series of shocks on April 18 leveled major blocks of San Francisco then fire swept the city. Water mains broke, troops used dynamite and guns to halt blazes, thousands homeless, mass burials and open-air services reported as relief streams in from Oakland and beyond.
Report from City Hall details worldwide aid surpassing ten million dollars and estimates of 2500 lives lost and 400 million dollars in property destroyed. Fire area covers three fourths of the city with downtown ruins and widespread tenting as merchants plan to resume in temporary structures. Trains into Oakland operate on schedule and refugees move outward while relatives seek connections to the stricken city.
Bedford residents mobbed the town hall to force the removal of Marshal Sutton and Justice McLachlin and Deputy Prosecutor Henry France after the death of William Ethridge. France was fined for cursing the dead man but later relieved of costs, fueling further anger.
Clarence Tilton 17, captain of Hammond High School football and basketball, died after an appendicitis operation linked to a hammer throw strain while attempting to set a record. The Indiana state meet is in Crawfordsville next May, and his death marks a second alleged athletic-related fatality at Hammond High in six months.
The Seventh Circuit sat in Indianapolis for the first time to dedicate the new federal building. Judges Peter S. Grosscup Francis E. Baker and William H. Seaman attended the ceremony with a reception at the federal ow library and a banquet at the Columbia club. The circuit was honored as guests at each event Thursday evening.
Jerry Votaw and Henry Kiser clashed over a young woman in Butler township. Votaw struck Kiser in the left eye, knocking him to the cement sidewalk. Kiser was jailed then released, and later died at Andrew Damron’s home from injuries sustained.
The Coal City Block Coal company begins sinking a shaft on the William Rheabottom farm near Coal City. Vein four feet thick at forty feet depth shows good quality. About a dozen banks operate from a top vein within three miles, but this is the first company to sink a shaft.
Police commissioners issue an order requiring all groceries and meat markets to close Saturday night at midnight and stay shut until Monday morning. The change ends a long standing Sunday trading custom. Some merchants approve the new rule.
Anticipated May 30 memorial program by the G A R in Indianapolis with a gala celebration. Veterans groups from civil and military organizations will participate as a committee of arrangements forms subcommittees to organize the event.
John Roby Oliver Haycock and Harry Smith pleaded guilty to murder in the first degree in Indiana and were sentenced to life imprisonment at Michigan City after being returned from the Indiana reformatory. Sheriff Maris and deputies transferred them to state custody with no delay.
Princeton report notes the Indiana Supreme Court will decide if a wholesale liquor dealer may sell directly to consumers without a retail license. Herman Bock of Oakland City was indicted for selling without a license. the court quashed the indictment and the state appealed.
Indignation spreads as Chicago gamblers invade Lake County near Lake Michigan and start a Monte Carlo near the shore. A petition among law and order groups seeks Gov. Hanly action to drive them out, with plans for a surprise operation.
The last of three confessed fish dynamiters was fined $250 after pleading guilty. John Parish Beyr Randall and John Sprague were arrested in the act of killing fish in the Big Blue river near Shelbyville last fall. Sprague remains in Shelby County jail.
Services at the English Lutheran church honored an unknown donor from Germantown, Pa who six years ago gave funds sufficient to build the church, valued at $15,000, with a commemorative tablet unveiled in the memory of the giver.
