Lebanon April 17 news item reports Anthony Beck a wealthy farmer five miles west of town found a whitecap notice and switches at his door. He hired bloodhounds to track the assailants but gain no trace. He suspects his wife knows more about the threats and vows to spend all he has to identify the offender.
Indiana weekly weather crop bulletin reports cool cloudy days with light frosts but overall favorable growing conditions. Rains benefited crops. wheat rye oats clover and pasturage improved. potatoes planted. tobacco beds and cabbage fields set. gardens and fruit trees developing. corn planting to begin next week. livestock exiting winter, rivers and wells still low.
Rushville reports Dr J H Spurrier, a venerable physician, suffers a daily nosebleed at 3:55 a m with several minutes of bleeding, an ailment baffling local doctors. Also note John Humphreys of Falmouth, hair loss over four days, attributes it to ivy poisoning. Mrs Charles A Jones of Auburn is arrested for annoying her husband and firing his clerks. Edward Gasho faces thirteen charges after a Carthage saloon bust. private detectives watched the site amid an anti liquor league effort.
An Indiana relative of the Wratten family, slain by David Stone the Daviess county assassin later executed, preserves a memento years later. He fashioned a wreath from locks of hair of each victim in a maple leaf design and will distribute photographs to surviving relatives.

Brazil reports a sensational shooting affray at Cory. William Tiffy fired five shots at Charles Cox, a local school teacher, after a dispute over talk concerning Cox and Tiffy's sister in their student teacher relationship. The incident occurred twelve miles south of the city.
An incendiary burned the Congregational church building and its contents at ConAL BLuFr. The nearby reading room with a public library of 2,000 volumes was destroyed. Loss pegged at 3,500 with no insurance. Firefighters found weather-boarding sprinkled with coal oil on arrival.
At a DePauw trustees meeting in Indianapolis on April 17 Bishop Thomas Bowman resigned as chancellor and Rev. C N Sims of Meridian Street M E Church was unanimously elected to succeed him. Trustees aim to raise a permanent endowment fund of 1 009 000 by 1900.
Richard Hart and Miss Belle Doll of Roxomo were betrothed but the wedding was postponed due to Miss Doll’s mother’s illness. Mrs Doll died last Friday and Hart, rushing home for the funeral, was killed by passing cars in Richmond.
Anderson April 17 Central Traffic association informs local lodge that railroads will offer half rates for the fifth district meeting of Knights of Pythias in Anderson on April 45.

Weather indications for 24 hours from 8 p m yesterday show generally fair skies across Illinois with warmer conditions in the north and west and variable winds. Indiana and Wisconsin expect fair weather with warmer temperatures and light to variable winds. Lower Michigan remains fair with slight warming and variable winds. Upper Michigan fair with warming in central and western areas. Iowa also shows fair weather with warmer conditions and winds turning southward.
New York markets show money on call easy at 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 percent and sterling exchange firm with bankers' bills around 4.893 and 4.883 for sixty days. Chicago Board of Trade quotes wheat mixed and corn, oats, park, lard, and produce prices with butter at 20 cents and eggs around 11 cents per dozen. Chicago live stock prices at Upton Stock Yards reflect hog and cattle ranges with receipts estimated at 11,900 and 8,000 respectively, notes on packing and stockers, with prices quoted for shipping steers and other categories.
In Rockford Illinois Edward W Brown backed by business and liberal factions won the mayoralty by 55 votes out of 6000 amid a high turnout. The A P A backed Hutchins faced strong anti license sentiment with aldermen elected 8 to 6 in favor of license supporters.
At an open air meeting in Denver Congressman Sibley urged unity under the free silver banner beyond party lines. General Warner warned the money question dominates politics and monometallism faces bimetallism, endorsing Sibley as a potential real president and urging patience in seeking silver restoration.
Senator Jones of Nevada, visiting New York, received a telegram from Sibley, presidential candidate of the American Bi metal lic party, urging him to join Sibley and General Warren for an address. The message asked his adhesion to the silver cause and free coinage.
Charles H. Mansur assistant comptroller of the treasury department and former Missouri congressman died after days of declining health. Born March 6 1835 in Philadelphia he served in the Fiftieth to Fifty-second Congresses and attended the 1884 Democratic national convention. Interment planned in Richmond Missouri with funeral train departing Washington yesterday.
Commercial Conference at Washington issued recommendations to the secretary of agriculture. Proposals include continuing official reports, listing state acreage, securing township reporters, diversifying reporters beyond farming classes, ending salaried state agents, scheduling reserve returns for major crops, using consular agents for foreign prospects, and making pre publication disclosure a penal offense. The conference adjourned.
Kansas City reports M. J. Numa one of the wests most dangerous counterfeiters is arrested in Topeka after being captured in Marquette McPherson county. Police found coin casts metal plating plaster unfinished coins and a check-raising liquid. A buried valuables chart led officers to moulds for several coin types on a Farm owned by Numa.
Springfield April 17 The state board of agriculture reports a green aphis infest apple buds but says the pests rarely cause lasting damage. When control is needed a 6 percent emulsion of kerosene sprayed on the trees kills the bug.
In Pittsburgh area on April 17 workers at the Nottingham mines owned by Henry Floersheim and the Wheeling division of the Baltimore and Ohio railway resumed at a 60 cent rate. A crowd of striking men soon gathered near the site and attempted to persuade or threaten workers to quit. Sheriff Clark dispatched deputies from Washington county to guard the area.
Boston April 17 The Hon Leverett Saltonstall former collector of the port of Boston died at his Brookline home aged 80 He was a descendant of Sir Richard Saltonstall who came from England with Governor Winthrop and founded the Massachusetts colony
Funeral services for James W. Scott will be held at St James Episcopal Church tomorrow with Rev. Ernest M. Stires and Rev. Dr. F W Gunsaulus officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
Miss Eleanor Mayo daughter of Frank Mayo married Colonel James Elverson Jr general manager of the Philadelphia Inquirer at the Church of the Incarnation by Rev. Dr. Arthur Brooks in New York.
W. E. Coleman, a well known southern Illinois young man linked with express companies, took laudanum and died by his own action. No cause could be found by his friends.
Ottumwa dispatch reports miners have disappeared from the Cincinnati area and observers expect troops to withdraw today. The absence leaves the region quiet, with predictions that miners may resume unrest once troops depart.

Oskaloosa Ia April 17 George H Clark prominent citizen brother of Congressman Samuel Clark editor of the Keokuk Gate City dropped dead from heart disease in evident case of neurasthenia of the heart.
