The Grande Opener shifts away from William McCleery’s new comedy Side By Side. Faye Emerson will not star, and Walter Abel and Hugh Reilly are not featured as planned. The curtain rises with a different production.
William McCleery presents The Lady Chooses a comedy starring Faye Emerson with Walter Abel and Hugh Reilly. The Playhouse season features 13 new apprentice faces from Connecticut and California, including Patricia Pan ero, Robert H. Solo, Irene Steindl, Daniel Selznick, and David Whorf.
Star hero James Awe of Westport Country Playhouse announces Imogene Coca will perform in Happy Birthday the third bill of the season during the week of June 28. It marks Coca’s only appearance in the Anita Loos comedy this summer and her first at Westport. Daniel Levin will direct.
Hart Sprager and others are discussed as possible relatives or associates as Playhouse explores possibilities for a George Kelly satire The Torchbearers with James Awe directing and stars Mary Boland and Alice Pearce Also proposed is two one act musicals The Thirteen Clocks and Trouble in Tahiti plus a potential Old Acquaintance with Peggy Wood and Jesse Royce Landis A re plan for Three Penny Opera with an eight piece band is considered but Tallulah Bankhead’s Dear Charles touring vehicle is ruled out due to price constraints
Faye Emerson opens Westport Country Playhouse 23rd season with the political comedy The Lady Chooses. Emerson plays Frances Parry opposite Hugh Reilly with Walter Abel as ex governor Meredith Ames. cast includes Amy Freeman Jeff Harris Beulah Garrick Jean Stapleton Lily Lodge Ellen Demming and Westporters Ina Bradley Claire Emory. Luther Kenneth directs and Marvin Reiss designed the library set. Performances run Monday through Saturday with matinees Wednesday and Saturday. Friday matinee moved to Saturday at 2:40 PM due to TV commitments.
The Community Methodist Church will hold Children's Day services Sunday at 11 oclock. Departments will award attendance pins books and Bibles. The annual Sunday School picnic is planned for Sunday afternoon June 27 at Sherwood Island with a 2 45 meeting at the church.
Westport YMCA World Service candy sales winners were awarded prizes Friday by Raymond M. Brown Jr. The Curtiss Candy Co. donated prizes for the top six sellers. Robert Papstein led with seven cases, followed by Dennis Grubb with six. Peter Grossman and Robert McCluckie tied for third with five cases each. Terry Smith sold four cases to take fourth, and Hank Ottinger sold just under four to place sixth.
