Property owners and merchants along Taylor Place circulate a petition to the Board of Selectmen urging measures to curb foul odors from the Saugatuck River town dump as heat approaches. They fear declining customers and note flies at restaurants amid ongoing waste covering efforts.
F. Edgar "Doc" Doubleday of Westport was honored for outstanding achievements in athletics and received the Dr Emanuel Davison memorial award at the Norwalk Jewish Center sports award dinner. Norwalkers Hy Landy and Elwood McSally were also recognized and several New York Yankees members were introduced.
Nick Street pitched a no hitter for the Cobras striking out 17 of 19 as they shut out the Sabres 11 to 0. He balked only once and added three hits in four at bats with seven steals.
Dr. Thomas T. Mackie, chairman of the Westport Planning and Zoning Commission, says the town will not hire a professional planner unless a technical problem stumps local talent. At a public hearing, CPA members urged outside help. Mackie pledged to recruit volunteers with specialized skills and only seek external guidance if no internal solution exists.
The town will advertise in two weeks for bids on a river reclamation project to build a parking lot on the Saugatuck River behind Main Street stores. Emerson Parker said details on the bridge crossing were settled with state authorities.
Professor Helen Olheim will teach voice at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley Mass while keeping her Westport home. She will work two days weekly as assistant professor starting July 1 after a career as a mezzo soprano at the Metropolitan Opera from 1935 to 1944.
Highway Commissioner G Albert Hill informed Westport residents by letter that all people living or working along the new thruway line must leave by the end of May 1956. The expressway is expected to begin construction by June 1, with right of way cleared by then. About 80 parcels will be used for the bridge and approaches near Indian Hill Road and Compo Greens Farms Roads. Local appraisers are evaluating land values before state estimates and offers. Some fear construction may not start in Westport by next June, noting the standard form letter used in other towns.
The Westport Community Art Association plans an exhibition program with American Federation of Art support to study great works of art. A memorial service for "Pop" Call was held at Bedford Junior High with a dogwood tree planted in his memory.

John M. Lupton withdrew from the Republican bid for Congress after the State Central Committee blocked his candidacy. He spoke briefly before being ruled out of order as Morano’s renomination moved forward. Lupton returns to advertising work with no immediate plans.
Basil Burwell of Newtown Turnpike publishes his first novel Our Brother the Sun via Hermitage House. Head of the Cherry Lawn School drama department in Darien and Silver Mine Guild Players director, Burwell previously issued verse and now presents a romantic tale of a white man among South American Indians and the ensuing events.
