The Long Lots Junior High School auditorium suffered a flash flood from yesterday’s heavy rain. A huge puddle almost 40 by 20 feet reached 1.5 inches inside, with 16 inches outside the door. Custodians removed interior water as officials seek flood causes and contractor acceptance.
The 16 inch Tennessee to New England gas line ruptured by a Manzi and Sons bulldozer caused evacuations in Westport. Town officials say the firm should have sought Conservation Commission approval before work in the Saugatuck River wetlands. Violations could incur fines up to 1000 dollars while investigations continue and the incident is to be reported to the Public Utilities Commission.
President Dick Elliott urged Westport Education Association members to increase visibility in political action public relations and negotiations. He criticized the Board of Education and local press while calling for accountability under the PDAP and highlighting funding choices for new teachers from Project Concern funds. Public relations and professional commitment were stressed as key goals.
The Westport Education Association and the Board of Education approved a two-year teachers contract. WEA President Richard Elliott said a substantial majority of about 500 members voted in favor in a closed session, while the Board gave unanimous approval in an evening executive session. The pact provides salary and fringe benefits increases totaling 6.4 percent this year and 5.8 percent in 1974-75. Vote not released.
