Westport Teachers Approve Early Retirement Incentive Plan
After more than a year of talks the Westport Education Association endorsed an Early Retirement Incentive Plan ERIP for 230 teachers with one dissent. Eligible staff age 50 by July 1 1980 and with 15 Connecticut years 10 in Westport receive annual cash bonuses of 8500 for three years then 4500 final year plus retirement benefits.

Westport 1978-79 per pupil cost $2,666.96, second in Connecticut. Weston $2,382.51 ranked sixth. Hartford leads with $2,745.58, followed by New Canaan, Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, Wilton in the top ten. State average $1,852.85. Eighty-one percent of Westport funding is local. Weston relies 83 percent locally with 16 percent state aid. The report warns dollars alone do not measure educational quality.

Westport Finance Board set to review budget restoration
The Westport Board of Finance will meet April 2 at 8 p.m. in Town Hall to consider restoring more than $400,000 cut from the $34.5 million budget. First Selectman Jacqueline Heneage seeks $106,500 restoration in her admin budget and the Board of Education aims to restore $150,000 of a $300,000 cut from its $18.3 million request, amid a 7.4 percent rise projected next year. The panel plans to weigh arguments carefully as residents largely favor maintaining some cuts, while safety and drainage needs justify keeping funds for projects including drainage improvements and a traffic engineer. A separate request seeks $60,000 for a jet vacuum truck for the Public Works sewage division, to be funded this year from capital and non-recurring accounts.
