A 59 year old Westport resident won first prize of 75000 in the Money Tree Lottery becoming the state’s first Super Winner. Herman Yellen of 7 Sycamore Drive qualified by earning 5000 in the prior draw joining 22 finalists at a Hartford ceremony where the Super Drawing took place.
Liz Lewis president of the Democratic Women of Westport praises 35 women and three 19 year olds seeking membership on the town committee and urges all Democratic voters to support them in the vote.
The Representative Town Meeting will meet Tuesday night at Bedford Junior High School at 8 15 p m to hear four requests totaling nearly 525 000 from employee contracts One request asks 317 996 to fund the first year of a two year teachers contract and another requests 200 000 for the caucus for two year committee members from 87 filing petitions of candidacy. The caucus runs 8 10 p m in the town courtroom to select 65 volunteers. The new party rules promise equal representation for women and young voters and bring a district wide contest for the first time. Women are described as diverse and qualified, not a bloc.
The Planning and Zoning Commission rejected Harvey Koizim's four acre Post Road project in Westport after six months of review. The panel will soon submit its own apartment regulations to the Southwestern Regional Planning Agency for review. A spring public hearing on the commission's proposal is planned. Koizim said the decision was largely encouraging a different development approach.
First Selectman John Kemish, following Town Counsel Stanley Atwood, proposes to keep the current retainer plus fee system for one more year rather than create a full-time salaried town counsel. Atwood would stay with Sherwood, Garrick and Cowell at a $12,000 retainer and $25,000 litigation account, serving full time with firm support.
