Long Lots Junior High School suffered a flood in its brand new auditorium during yesterday's downpour. From 9 to 10 45 a.m. a large puddle about 40 feet by 20 feet filled the space with water up to 1.5 inches deep. Exterior water reached about 16 inches outside the door while custodians removed interior water.
Arthur Bleemer says the town has not formally accepted the auditorium from the contractor and will condition acceptance on a flood solution. Architect Joseph Salerno notes a possible unknown water source or undersized storm drains as the flood cause, with an investigation by Public Site and Building Committee and engineers. An answer is hoped in the next few days.
President Dick Elliott challenged Westport Education Association members to increase visibility in political action public relations and negotiations during the new year. He urged nearly 500 teachers to speak up as individuals with know-how and experience to influence local educational decision makers.
The Westport Education Association and the Board of Education ratified a two year teachers contract. WEA president Richard Elliott said a substantial majority of about 500 members voted in favor in a closed session. The board approved unanimously later that evening. The pact provides salary and fringe benefits increases totaling 6.4 percent this year and 5.8 percent in 1974 75.
The 16 inch Tennessee to New England gas line ruptured by a Manzi and Sons bulldozer near the West Branch of the Saugatuck River led to evacuations of schools and homes in Westport. Town officials say the company should have sought Conservation Commission approval before bulldozing in wetlands as investigations continue and a PUC report is planned.
