CCLU Sues Westport Milford and Fairfield Over Beach Access
The Connecticut Civil Liberties Union plans to sue Westport Milford and Fairfield over alleged inequitable beach access for nonresidents. Attorney Judith Mears says litigation will start in ten days after a August 27 meeting with town counsels, who rejected alternatives.

Haskell tops 300 signatures in three days for school board bid
Board of Education member A Cheves Haskell Jr reports surpassing 300 petition signatures in three days for a Republican bid to qualify for the October primary. He notes all signatures will be reviewed by the GOP registrar and expects to meet the 356 required by the 4 p.m. Thursday filing deadline, with a primary on October 1 possible if successful.

Westport and Weston Open 16 Schools for 9 412 Students
The 16 public schools in Westport and Weston will open tomorrow for about 9 412 students for the 1973 74 year. Westport enrolling 6 938 students and Weston 2 474 with slight declines and small increases noted. New staff include 35 in Westport and 18 in Weston as workshops and orientations conclude and classes begin.

Settlement talks edge toward deal in Westport schools
Negotiations between the Westport Education Association and the Board of Education show potential for a settlement. State mediator Frederick McKone stated a basis for settlement has been proposed and a recess was ordered to work out details, with final costs and contract language to determine if an agreement is reached.
