Based on a planning and zoning study committee report, the Representative Town Meeting last night was set to deny a town purchase of the 20 acre Kowalsky gravel pit off Easton Road. The committee chaired by Robert Slaughter recommended delaying after a six month extension was obtained.
First Selectman John Kemish asks the Planning and Zoning Commission for a further six month extension of the Taylor Place landfill transfer station permit, to run until July 31 1972. He notes the town’s garbage issues and proposes moving operations to state land on the Sherwood Island Connector, while awaiting action.
Officials say the Four Town Drug Network will withdraw its federal funding application after a review found it did not meet current requirements. The executive board plans to consider reorganizing the regional agency to qualify for the 500000 dollar federal grant as seven area drug groups form a new coalition.
Junior highs treatment programs including three Network members announce the Association of Drug Treatment Programs of Fairfield County. Officials say the group will coordinate seven member programs, exchange staff, and track "program hoppers" who move between sites.
State Rep. Alan Nevas says the upcoming General Assembly likely to raise the sales tax to seven and one half or eight percent while an income tax remains politically unlikely this year. He cites weak revenues and a need to fund projects like a dental college and a teachers retirement fund, forecasting an income tax as inevitable once a new governor takes office.
U S Representative Stewart McKinney challenged a proposed 20 percent across the board fare increase for the Penn Central New Haven line aimed by the MTA and CTA. He argues the New Haven operation is shared and questions immediate plans for further hikes while the restructuring remains under federal review.
