School superintendent Kenneth Brummell urged the Bedford school board to keep Bedford Elementary open for the 1973-74 term and close it in 1974-75. He backed a redistricting plan called Plan B developed by LKB Inc, amid enrollment uncertainty at Monday’s meeting.
The plan unifies Saugatuck Shores and closes Bedford Elementary, redrawing 24 percent of the elementary population. The school board will hold a second public hearing tomorrow night at 8 15 in Bedford Junior High and aims for a final decision by late April possibly delayed. If no vote is taken this month, redistricting may be ruled out for next fall due to policy.
A five year enrollment projection issued by Westport school officials estimates total enrollment will drop 1,368 students to 2,335 by 1977 78. Elementary level faces the largest loss while upper grades also decline though less steeply with junior high enrollment expected to fall from 1,888 to 1,650.
