Idaho ex governor Holds Grading, a Republican, announces he will run for United Blaine senator. The race targets the seat currently held by Democrat Job Nugent.
Portland crowds greet President Wilson on his Columbia River highway visit. Mayor declares a half holiday as thousands line downtown streets to watch the arrival and parade with Wilson central to the spectacle. He urges League of Nations support in noon and evening addresses to about 200 and 7,000 Oregonians respectively.
An American Legion gathering in Portland resorts to alcohol to recruit former soldiers into the local post. The message notes housing strains in The Dalles, belt shortages in the city, and a surge of sheep in Lane County. Lieutenant Edward Everett Wilson was killed in Texas while flying. Oregon image: railway fare hearings set for September 22. Florence Engstrom resigns as office stenographer. George Saunders indicted for embezzlement in Josephine County but acquitted at Grants Pass.

Disastrous oil fires in New York caused extensive damage at the Stone & Flemax Oil plant in Long Island City. Injuries numbered above zero with losses estimated between five and ten million dollars. Tanks ruptured, girders toppled, and burning oil flowed along Newton Creek, in a scene likened to war devastation.
New York reports Herbert Hoover returning from Europe denies any political ambitions and rejects being a presidential candidate declaring he is not a candidate under any circumstances. He backs the League of Nations as is and notes no chance of European normalcy until treaty uncertainties end. Quebec reports five men robbed the mail aboard the Ocean Limited Express of 75000 dollars.
Judge B C Dean sentenced Townley and Oth bert to three months in Jackson county Jail with no option of a fine. They were committed on July 12 for conspiracy to teach loyalty in a case heard here.
Washington notes marked General Pershing turning 69 with birthday greetings as admirers gathered at the War Department. Pershing was born September 13 1860 and remains a central figure in U S military affairs.
Washington labor leaders met with President Wilson in Seattle urging action to prevent a nationwide strike on October. They pressed for clemency for political prisoners including Wells Sadler and Morris Pass and linked labor grievances to broader anti war and sedition cases. Wilson urged labor to unite with capital and avert conflict during his October 6 conference.
Over 300 students are now enrolled at Pendleton High School, the largest enrollment in its history. Other notes include new garage plans in Cottage Grove, experimental wells for Aurora, and foundations under way for a four story temple in Pendleton.
