Secretary McAdoo announced from North Haven Maine that up to 30 million dollars in gold could be deposited in Federal Reserve banks in Atlanta Dallas and Richmond to back loans on cotton via warehouse receipts if Allies put cotton on the contraband list. Deposits could be temporary with interest charges and may shift to direct National banks at a six percent cap. The move follows Allied plans to support the cotton market amid embargo actions.
Five thousand residents of Newport Arkansas are marooned as White River floods destroy levees. Eight dead reported, town flooded six to twelve feet. William E Tuttle a prominent New Jersey banker and former congressman was named United States commissioner to the Panama Exposition opening November 3. The prior congress set aside 28000 for national participation while details of administration and duties remain to be finalized amid wartime tensions and fiscal considerations.
New Orleans reports efforts to reach Marah Island about 160 miles southwest to learn fate of 100 Island residents feared lost in the storm. Islanders are fishermen and campers. seas are rough. Governor Hall ordered the state conservation commission to deploy large boats for rescue.
On Mount Rainier a climber named G F Ord Way of Boston with a party of tourists fell down a canyon and died. Mrs Ord Way witnessed the fall as rescuers recovered the body. The accident marks the first such incident in the park season since 1912.
The ancient tower of Rawa on the River Rawka in Russian Poland stands ruined after artillery and infantry bombardment and the city’s capture by German forces.
A new tank steamer for Cuban Distilling Co named Cubadist will be 859 feet long 54 feet 6 inches beam and 22 feet 4 inches depth with 9000 tons capacity and molasses cargo. Built for Edgar H Luckenbach it follows another 10000 ton freighter order. The Gore River yard employs about 5000 people and aims to complete the vessel in about a year.
