Oregon school districts face teacher shortages as the new term nears while committees discuss budgets and major projects. From Linn County schools delaying openings to industry updates at the state level, reports detail roadwork, rail, and dam project delays and local enterprise plans.
Residents who sold property for a government railroad right of way near Quinn Bay have no legal claim to free passes in addition to the compensation. Statutory provisions prohibit such passes, per the government right of way department at Newport.
The Weston Leader invites all Boy Scouts to compete in a subscription contest to grow the paper’s list and fund Liberty Bond investments. Subscriptions options include Four Years for $6.00 or Five Years for $7.60, with votes noted as 250 and 460.
Allied forces push along five vital sectors in a German line as French troops drive General vom Hecht over Lansigny heights. Foch links the Alene and Somme battles, with French success northwest of Boissons and plateau near Antreches. Haig forces the enemy to give ground near Armentieres as big guns shell the insecure line.
Boys are told each collector earns ten percent of all they collect with that commission deducted from daily turnover. A prize fund, based on net collections, offers first prize 50 percent of the fund, then 25, 15, and 10 percent. If net collections total 500, prizes total 100 with 50 to first, 25 to second, 15 to third, and 10 to fourth, paid by the Leader in bank checks after judges’ decision.
The notice sets a contest with judges J W Porter Frank Price and Robert Proudfit forming a quorum to guard a sealed ballot box at Weston Mercantile Co. Counts occur each Thursday at 10am with a final count on September 26. Entrants may obtain receipt and ballot blanks at the Leader office next Tuesday August 27 at 10am. Local ballots use a prescribed form and votes must align with subscription sums.
Prisoners at the Washington state penitentiary in Walla Walla mutinied around 7:30 p m after a guard shot and killed Fred Tiger Johnson while he tried to escape Guard John Davison killed Johnson and was exonerated by the coroner The mutiny followed the shooting and involved John Wandell who had earlier murdered E W Olson state industrial insurance commissioner
French forces attacked in a new sector between Picardy and Soissons Rheims fronts driving German lines. Allied gains extended over three miles of front to a depth near a mile around Autrechamp area nine miles west of Sarnsons. Washington reports a favorable House committee vote on the administration man power bill with a 18 to 20 year old separate service classification.
A steam trawler Triumph fitted with two guns and wireless, crewed by 16 Germans from a captured U‑boat, raided Ashing yanks off the Canadian coast. Crews of the schooners sunk by the Triumph have arrived at the port.
British troops reportedly advanced to 1600 2000 yards on a three mile front between Views Derquis and Balltesl and moved southwest of Marville. Ont Lereteen village and 409 prisoners captured. On the Somme front patrol fighting continues as British lines press east of Fampenz and north of Merville. Germans withdraw in Merville Lys sector signaling a shift to stronger defensive positions.
General March reports that over 3 million American men are under arms with more than 1.46 million abroad in France Italy and Siberia. He confirms plans to have 60 divisions in France by June 30 and at least 30 divisions or 1.6 million men under a unified command on the Western Front by that date, with 2.2 million actual combatants in reserve.
Casualties for the United States in the war week ending January day total 21 467 with 18 707 army deaths and 2 760 marine corps deaths. The U S forces landed in France total 8 123 with 7 296 army and 637 marine casualties. Wounded total 11 614 and missing or prisoners 1 718.
