New Baptist Church Cornerstone Laid in Westfield
The Baptists of Westfield celebrated the cornerstone laying for their new Elm street church on Sunday the 9th. Rev. Edward J. Holden led services as guests including Mr. and Mrs. Hatfield of Scotch Plains attended. A large audience heard addresses by Rev. J. Madison Hare and former Governor William N. Runyon as the Westfield Band performed. The old cornerstone contents were replaced in the new wall with Major Walter A. Dempsey overseeing the ceremony.

The Town Council received a petition from the estates of J B Irving W B Welch and James T Pierson asking to rezone their North avenue east properties from residential to manufacturing. The petition was referred to the Law and Rules Committee amid plans for an artificial feed plant in the neighborhood.

Clean-Up Squad visits Plainfield for veterans claims
The American Red Cross, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars form a joint committee to aid ex service men for claims to be presented to the Clean-Up Squad from the Veterans Bureau. Representatives will staff Red Cross Headquarters Prospect Street each evening from 8 to 9 calling for advice on war risk matters. The squad will handle compensation, insurance, training, allotments, back pay and medical treatment with on the spot examinations as needed. It visits Plainfield October 22 24 and 25 for Union county cases.

Post Office Building Fire Damages Top Floor Apartments
Fire broke out around noon Monday in the post office building on im street. Flames moved from papers in the dumb water shaft causing about 1000 dollars damage, mainly to the top floor apartments occupied by IL G Sexton and BH M Prugh. Building owned by Assemblyman Arthur N Pierson and insured.
