Park Opening Program Set With Governor to Dedicate

Westfield prepares for a formal park dedication this Saturday with afternoon and evening events. Governor Edge will give the dedicatory address, and Mayor Evans has organized a detailed program led by George Weston. Invitations have gone to state officials, neighboring town mayors, and militia units for the ceremony.

Memorial Day Program Planned in Westfield

The town schedules a comprehensive Memorial Day observance with services at churches, a Washington School parade at 8 30 a m, and a cemetery ceremony led by Comrade Edward E Townley. Participants include the State Militia Reserve Company Westfield Rifle Club band Boy Scouts Camp Fire Girls students and citizens. Col W A Stryker directs the parade and the G A R escorts.

Flag Presented to First Presbyterian Church on Patriotic Service

During Sunday service at the First Presbyterian Church the Dorcas Society presented a handsome silk American flag. It was carried to the pulpit by a Boy Scout and presented by M B Dutcher. Rev Dr Steans accepted the gift and delivered an inspiring patriotic sermon.

Westfield raises funds for Red Cross beyond quota

Westfield citizens surpassed the $18,000 quota in the $100 million Red Cross drive, reaching over $32,400 by last evening. The Playhouse drive added $3,430 with Charlie Chaplin films and Red Cross nurses drawing praise from Four Minute Men and local volunteers. Officer Howarth was cleared of charges by council vote, while the Rosecrans case proceeds with a June 8 hearing.

Passing of the Old Me Church in Westfield

The old First Methodist church built in 1877 in Westfield will be demolished within days. Residents who aided in the building’s erection recall its history as the third Methodist structure and note the site’s use for Sunday School and social events until coal conservation led to abandonment. Meat prices rise but Woolraff's Market offers strictly fresh fish and a weekly special on new potatoes.

Formal Opening of Community Market

A meeting of the Community Market division of the Food Committee set final plans for the market's formal opening this Saturday. Farmers with stalls include Mrs Singer and Mesars Hecker French Fischer Ditgel Frye and Howarth. Dawn Fete for St Pauls Church

The annual Lawn Fete at St Pauls Church will be held Saturday afternoon and evening. The event features dances rehearsed by children and youths under Mr Morrison with names such as the Iyinee of the Farmerettes and Dance of the Alligs. Ice cream lemonade cake and candy will be sold from wartime recipes. All are welcome.

Dr. T A Harvey announces the National Bank of Westfield has secured Eliot G Johnson of Watertown New York to fill the cashier post vacated by Howard Cline who resigned to join a New York State bank examiner office.

Johnson resigns Watertown post for Westfield bank

Hintlet G. Johnson assistant cashier of the Jefferson County National Bank resigns to become cashier of the National Bank of Westfield New Jersey. His resignation takes effect May 31 and he will start his duties the following day. Johnson has been a prominent local banker alderman and supervisor. He is a Yale graduate and long active in church and Masonic circles. His family will move to Westfield in autumn leaving his Watertown home at 522 Sherman Street. He and his wife Miss Lacey J. James have three children.

Old Church to Host Farewell Service at 8 PM

Pastor S. J. Werben of the First Methodist Church announces a farewell service in the old church on Sunday at 8 o clock. The event serves as a send off before the building is torn down and will offer attendees something a little out of the ordinary.
