Westfield voters urged to back the Third Liberty Loan as Dozens of Four Minute Men and Playhouse Drive workers report brisk subscriptions. A large Friday gathering at the Playhouse raised the total to 70 800 dollars with a 25 000 dollar challenge and 16 000 dollars on opening day. Increased Red Cross membership boosts Westfield chapter work
The local Red Cross chapter reports rising worker numbers and active efforts to recruit more volunteers especially among businesswomen and high school girls. Ninety women registered last Monday, and two hundred comfort bags and 18 894 gauze dressings have been prepared for the Atlantic Division. The Young Ladies Auxiliary aims to raise 600 dollars for Comfort Kits for Westfield boys, with kits costing about four dollars each. A special fundraiser at the Playhouse on May 10 features Vivian Martin in Petticoat Pilot to aid the Comfort Kit Fund, plus a plantation melodies performance by Miss Mabel Sturgis. The bureau urges knitters to make wool socks to prevent trench feet, while Washington requests 100 000 comfort kits for embarkation points.
