Westfield merchants face a council led probe into pricing with possible reopening of the municipal market and study of an ice plant. Mayor Littlefield named a committee to assess costs, noting local prices rival New York on coal and vegetables.
Memorial Day observance to be more elaborate in Weatfield with a monster parade to the cemetery and a high profile speaker at Fairview Cemetery. Major Leigh M. Pearsall chairs the committee with H B Wright secretary and William C. Dodge treasurer. Clubs and groups from G A R American Legion D A R and Boy and Girl Scouts join the planning.
The report states J. B. Irving, wintering at Orlando Worlda, will transfer on return to Westfield the corner property at Quimby and Kim streets. The buildings include Charles Michel’s storefront, Horace Martin’s bicycle shop, and E. J. Shuster’s Quimby residence. The property passes to E. B. Randolph, representing a purchasing syndicate that will later build a store office and apartment on the site.
Parking and Tumulty, a new law firm, unites Rep Randolph Perkins of New Jersey and Joseph P. Tumulty, former President Wilson's secretary. Offices planned in Jersey City and Washington. Longtime Hudson bar and New Jersey Legislature ties persist despite party differences. Perkins previously served as one of Westfield's early mayors.
The council amended the Daylight Saving Ordinance to run from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in September. Mrs. Mary T. Tubby resigned from the Free Public Library Board and was replaced by Mrs. M. FP. Eget. A bid for a Studebaker police touring car came in at 66 dollars and was referred to the Town Property Committee. Several street improvement ordinances were approved or tabled with public hearings set for April 11. Treasurer Gilmore reported 15188.65 on hand and tax receipts of 1170.78 plus costs. The Westfield Band offered 750 to furnish music for 1920, and tax revenue notes totaling 16000 were authorized for retirement. Mayor Battlefield presided.
The Soldiers' Bonus Commission announces that NJ ex service members who served March 26 1917 to November 11 1918 and were residents of New Jersey may receive ten dollars per month of service up to 100 dollars total. Application blanks are at American Legion Headquarters Prospect street. Discharge certificates must accompany the form and a field agent will review discharges at Martin Wallberg's Post HQ on Tuesday evening April 12.
The Westfield Tenants Club held a well attended dance at the Westfield Golf Club house with sixty eight couples. The event praised for fellowship and plans for future socials as the Golf Club moves to Cranford and merges with a larger county organization.
The hurricane that hit Westfield Monday afternoon caused major tree loss across the town. The Gallagher tract south of Grove Street suffered 23 fallen trees including willows, a large tree fell near Washington and Westfield avenues, and at 716 Central Avenue two chimneys blew off and several window lights shattered.
Clement Chapman, a colored man, was held without bonds to await grand jury action by the Recorder Board Monday night on four charges brought by Magele Hicks, also colored, aged 16. The complainant, who charged Chapman with rape, was represented by her brother Thomas Hicks at 02 Ripley Place. Chapman was taken to the county jail yesterday.
