Boy Struck by Automobile on Prospect Street

Vernon Littlefield of Effingham reports his 10 year old son was hit by a Cranford car on Prospect Street at noon while walking to school. The boy suffered a compound skull fracture and was taken to Mahltenberg Hospital after examination by Drs. Clair and Decker. The car, owned by T. A. Wry of Cranford, was driven by a chauffeur identified as Joe.

Mrs Hlien Bettes Dead After Lingering Illness At Home

Mrs Hlien Bettes aged 70 died at her home on Umberland Street after a lingering illness. She was born in Stamford Conn and spent most of her life there before moving to Wentfield about three years ago. Surviving are three children Miss Grace Thompson of this town Richard B of Allentown Pa and a daughter Mrs Le Was. The remains were taken Saturday to Inghield Mass for funeral and burial on Sunday.

Woman's Club hosts luncheon play and art exhibits

The Woman's Club gathering featured guest members, a luncheon plan for April 26 to mark its twentieth anniversary, and an exhibition of Harry Goodrich paintings at the Kate Greenaway tea room. A Guild-style program included Hazel Marah piano solos and a club member written play "Ghosts" about English history women, with a 1916-17 tentative program announced. Fire Chief Decker and about twenty-five men attend Garwood dedication of the new borough hall and fire department HQ on Saturday.

Catholics Debate Bible Access at Westfield Forum

At the Westfield First M B church a Men's Christian Forum session charged Catholics with keeping the Bible from the laity. Italian Protestants Guissipe Villa and Dominico Filiciedo claimed Catholics attend church mainly for rites and do not read the Bible, while excommunication was cited over Bible translations. The meeting explored the church as the sole interpreter of scripture and called for broader access and study of biblical texts. The discussion continues next Sunday.

Dr John G Coyle of New York will lecture on The Catholic American and the Anti Catholic Crusade at an entertainment under Trinity church auspices in Westfield Theatre Hall on Tuesday evening April 6.

Building Boom Returns in Westfield Area

Building activities are resuming in Westfield with new contracts and plans piling up at firms led by Tuttle Bros and J S Irving Co. Local contractors report 25 to 30 plans under evaluation and contracts for materials for five new houses. Real estate agents note many rentals though sales remain limited.

Charles R. Scott, state Y M C A Boys Department leader, will present Manhood in the Making with stereopticon views. The talk highlights his 20 plus years of boy work in New Jersey and is open to boys and parents with a silver offering.

Antis to Lunch Luncheon for Westfield Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage

The Kate Greenaway hosts a Tuesday luncheon on April 13 at 1 o clock with Westfield Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage. Out of town guests will attend and speeches follow. Card tables available for a small fee and play after lunch. Tickets from officers or committee members Mrs Paul Oliver and Mrs Wm Gomes. Proceeds support state campaign work.

Last Lecture of Series On Panama Canal Exposition

The final talk of the regular series by the Board of Education will be at Washington School next Saturday evening. Prof. J R Lynch discusses The Panama Canal and the Panama Pacific Exposition with slides showing recent views and traveler tips for after leaving the canal and during a visit to the Exposition grounds.
