RAL AVENUE TO BE IMPROVED

A Town Committee meeting discussed upgrading Ral Avenue to Elizabeth Avenue with concrete pavement doubling street width and curb installation. Estimated cost near 10000 dollars, funded by abutting property owners at 3 dollars per front foot, with the Freeholders overseeing the project and Roy Collins handling the work. Westfield and nearby avenues to the sea were noted along with a regional post office route expansion adding eight more routes.

McCormack Indicted by Grand Jury in Westfield Slayings

A New Jersey grand jury indicted four counts of murder stemming from Christmas Day shootings in Westfield. James McCormack, a special officer, and Hyder Johnson pleaded not guilty at arraignment as trials set for February 23. Prosecutors expect swift trials with Johnson’s likely to take one to two days.

Citizens Conference on Education for New York New Jersey and Pennsylvania

A Citizens’ Conference on Education for the states of New Jersey New York and Pennsylvania will meet in New York City on January 28 29 with sessions at Town Hall 43d Street and Chamber of Commerce 66 Liberty Street. Grand Chapter Meeting in Newark New Jersey

The fifty first annual session of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of New Jersey is in Newark this week. The opening meeting occurred yesterday with regular business sessions planned for this afternoon and evening and Thursday. Thursday will feature charter presentations to subordinate chapters under dispensation, past grand matron jewels, officer elections for 1921, and other important formal business.

Troopers Shot At By Autoists Near Clark Township

Troop D patrols in Grant lane near the American Felt mill were fired upon by a passing autoist. Corporal Carter led the party with Privates McVoy Bears Randolph Thompson and McGillean. The car fled then halted. occupants named as Miller and Thompson, both armed with permits. They claimed the cavalrymen were bandits in uniform.

Bandits Open Fire On Car Near Rahway

A hooded bandit raid occurred Sunday around 7 30 near the Bracher property as Benjamin Erdey of Chrome fled toward Carteret after two shots were fired at his auto. Police from Rahway Westfield and Plainfield searched Carteret roads but found no suspects. A Perth Amboy trio, stopped on St Georges avenue, included A A Maurer who lacked proper registration papers and was summoned.

Westfield Military Co to Receive Discharges

The Dinner Committee of the Westfield Company of the New Jersey State Militia Reserve plans a final dinner on Monday February 7 at the Episcopal Parish House. The event includes music and songs with no speeches as discharges arrive and members receive service buttons from the state.

Tuttle Named State Banking and Insurance Commissioner

William H. Tuttle Jr of this town was nominated by Governor Edwards and confirmed by the Senate for the three year term as State Commissioner of Banking and Insurance at $6000 annually, succeeding Frank H. Smith of Plainfield. Tuttle is a Democrat. The Leader previously praised his qualifications.
