Wesley Collins Named Westfield Town Surveyor and Clerk

C Wesley Collins of Plainfield was appointed town surveyor and clerk of the purchasing board to replace A W Vars who resigned. Collins, born in Brooklyn, has lived in Westfield fourteen years and worked in public engineering before returning to the Vars office. The council also reviewed bids, authorized a sewer project, issued a temporary note, and adopted a tax budget of 17624781 with 13495581 to be raised by taxation.

Walberg Post Appoints Committees for ByLaws and Activities

At a Martin Walberg Post No 3 meeting in Town Hall Commander Leigh M Pearsall was authorized to form four committees to study bylaw changes entertainments and smokers cooperate with Boy Scouts and Red Cross on Prospect Street School building plans and discuss Memorial Day plans with the G A R. Pearsall also named an athletic committee including Harold Trevenen Leon Marenghi George Fldridge Harold Coddington and Herbert Johnson. The post offered aid to the Mayor and Town Council for emergencies.

Dr R R Sinclair misplaced a gold watch and chain with a gold knife after hurrying to an emergency call. The watch bears his name and was a testimonial gift from patients. A substantial reward is offered for its return.

Colored thief caught after store robbery in town

Police, aided by Newark officers, arrest Nathaniel Booth, 24, of West Broad Street, within five hours of a $100 theft at Carlo Clement’s Spring Street store. Booth confessed, had $74 on hand and admitted taking $26 more to cover the loss. He is held by Newark Police Headquarters.

Leader Almanac 10th Year Distribution Report

The Leader almanac appears for the tenth year with a full calendar and lists of town officials banks utilities physicians and osteopaths. It is distributed by boys to every Westfield home this week and copies are available at the office if not received.

Alpha Epsilon Informal Dance Planned at Washington School

The Alpha Epsilon fraternity will host an informal dance at the Washington School auditorium on Friday evening February 13. Members expect a successful event with a general good time for all attendees. Music will be provided by the Moran Quartette.

Prospect Street School project likely abandoned

A meeting of Protestant church representatives in Prospect Street discussed a plan to convert the old Prospect Street School into a youth recreation center. They doubted fund raising success due to youth loyalties and costs, estimating at least 25 000 needed and urging nonsectarian, inclusive access for all faiths.

War Memorial Proposed for M E Ghurgh Brotherhood

At the monthly Men's League meeting of the First M E Church the proposal to install two memorial windows in the chapel at 500 dollars and a bronze tablet honoring members who served in war was approved. A committee will oversee the project, and the fourteenth annual league dinner is set for March 4 with tickets on sale. Also noted is ongoing work to use the old Prospect Street School as a youth HQ and a report on church representatives' meeting. Frank Sherman and Carl Wingart performed for the audience afterward.
