Local teachers from elementary to high school and kindergarten sign a petition for a ten percent raise to begin next school year. They request a budget-aligned scale and note the high cost of living. the request was referred to the Education Committee for consideration at a special meeting.
February report states public school teachers in the city have formed an association and are preparing a petition to present to the Board of Education asking that increases in wages be granted to offset the rising cost of living.
A budget report from the Finance Committee outlines living and education costs for Ait schools. The draft allocates about 64,963 for current year expenses with 6,098 growth. salaries may be trimmed to fit the final appropriation. A board review suggests possible building uses and a commemorative Lincoln day prize proposal.
Westfield hosted a large audience for a two hour music guessing contest where nearly 150 children participated and fourteen placed with near perfect scores. Walter Clark won first prize with Grace Ainsworth second and Mary Griswold third, while eleven others won piano rolls or sheet music.
William Stilt reports his barn infested with rats until he used Rat-Snap on a Saturday. By the next day he had caught five, and within ten days all were exterminated. Ad appears in The Leader Shopping Guide for Union County. Read advertisements carefully.
Robert Woodruff reports using Rat-Snap for two weeks with rapid rodent drops. He notes one rat died in a stall and three near the feed box, with several more found dead or missing since. He calls Rat-Snap the best product and urges readers to Frutehey's Drug Store and Traynor's Food Store for purchase.
News of Judge W B Touceys death spread after he collapsed at the home of Fla Chief Decker while using a typewriter. Toucey aged 73 or 74 had lived in Westfield for about thirty years and served as Police Judge and Justice of the Peace. Remains moved to the Cox home. telegrams sent to Detroit to a son. Funeral plans not yet set.
Fire Chief Decker tested a plan to flood the school campus to create a skating pond. The small trial showed feasibility, but lack of support from another town department and the Board of Education's workload halted progress.
The Fireside Council R A holds a meeting tomorrow evening with carpet bowling as the featured activity. Orator Spencer endorses the game and invites all members to attend for a chance at prizes for high scores. Refreshments will be served.
