The Town Council named Middleditch Evans Floyd as investigating committee members to probe town affairs. Aimed at uncovering past and present financial transactions, the panel will start February 20 with power to subpoena witnesses and compel testimony as needed.
Last Friday the St Pauls Men's Club met at the parish house to discuss raising a parish house for the church. They proposed weekly contributions of twenty five cents to one dollar indefinitely until all share. President J H Pencheon gave a talk on Tennyson and quoted long passages from memory, praising Mr Pencheon's hidden talent.
Today February 1 delegates from New Jersey attend a gathering at St Pauls church as part of a Lent program and missionary outreach. The event includes a morning session on pledge cards and a New Jersey delegation meeting led by Miss Neely with a focus on Lent and Holy Week activities.
Assemblyman Thompson presents two nonpartisan Westfield measures to the Legislature. Endorsements come from Congressman Tuttle and Mayor Dennis. The bills seek mayoral veto power and a town comptroller to oversee finances, with broad early support and no noted opposition.
A letter to the Leader urges a town social club uniting men and women across churches for recreation and camaraderie. At Westfield Golf Clubhouse last night over 100 members and guests enjoyed a beefsteak dinner with a festive program, honoring President Worth and featuring Al Brown and Jackson.
Beginning February 15 the Westfield High School pupils will publish a weekly paper in the Leader to cover public school news. Editors will be elected including an editor in chief and four assistants and they will organize the paper for the school year. Prof. Martin will lead the organization meeting and space in the Leader will be used for student news.
Joseph Venesa of Scotch Plains faced Recorder Collins on a charge of selling liquor without a license. He sought a trial, requested a lawyer, and was required to post $200 bond after initial refusal. Bondsman Jack Capitella provided the amount. police intensify efforts to curb illegal liquor sales.
Mrs. J W Bennett marks her 87th birthday at her daughter Mrs George Gorter’s Kimner Street home. She entertained her children and grandchildren. born in Connecticut and moved from Elisabeth sixty years ago. Attending are Estelle Benimett of Roselle, Mrs John Jackson of Norwalk, and Mrs George Fort of Fargo City.
