Banks across the region will close daily at 2 p.m. to speed up Liberty Loan processing and reduce staff overtime. The shift aims to assist workers, many of whom are women, in getting home sooner while supporting the Fourth Liberty Loan drive. Westfield residents are urged to complete banking before 2 p.m. whenever possible.

Home on Sick Leave for RAF Lieutenant Watts
Lieutenant Hillary Watts of the Royal Air Force arrives in New York for a three month sick leave to visit his mother in Mountainside before joining his wife in Toronto. He has served as an instructor since last December and hopes to fly again after recovery. His brother, Lieut Ruskin Watts, a British flyer and prisoner in Germany, is said to be interned in Holland.

Captain Ian D. R. McDonald of the Royal British Squadron visits the Hutson home at 637 Clark Street with his parents and sister in Antigua. He recounts battles over Werstoff and other Hun planes, holds an official score of twenty downed enemies, and shares daring escape stories from 8 100 to 4 000 feet. He was born in Antigua and earned his wings on April 27, later receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross at age nineteen. He toured the Standard Aircraft Company plant in Elizabeth and praised Hanley Page ships with Liberty Motors. He is off duty due to a minor eye injury but expects to return to service in months.

The Exempt Firemen held a meeting at fire headquarters last evening and inducted eight new members Christopher R. Tobin John C. Tobin Eugene W. Chamberlin Charles H. Denman Captain Frank Minnich Thomas Hy sip Thomas Orr and John C. Half penny. The group now has seventy five members and aims to recruit more eligible men. The organization includes many town citizens and maintains a meeting room in the fire HQ. Mrs. Frank R. Pennington thanked the society through President Harden for their kindness during her husband’s illness and death. Officers are President Christopher W. Harden Vice President John Utsinger Recording Secretary Grover Traynor Financial Secretary Isaac Seeley and Treasurer Isaac Scudder.

Westfield Company of the State Military Reserve returns from a week at Sea Girt Camp. About 900 to 1,000 militia men gathered there for training under regular officers and U S regulars. A dress parade and inspections drew local officials and 2,000 spectators.
