Fire destroys Garwood barn killing horses and pigs

A blast at a Garwood barn near North Cavennés and South Avenue ignited a fire that engulfed the structure, killing three work horses and all pigs. Firemen from Garwood and nearby units contained the blaze, saving a two family house nearby. the motive remains unclear as residents were away picnicking when it happened.

Westfield Avenue Home Robbed While Family Out

A Westfield Avenue residence was entered Monday morning while the family was away in a car. Thieves took a gold watch a ladies diamond ring a wedding ring and $11. Police are investigating the robbery.

Public Service Worker Injured After Lenox Elmer Crash

J H Adams of the Public Service Corporation was thrown from the front seat with a broken hip and bruises when Mrs Sadie H Drayton of Plainfield hit the Ford delivery car. The Drayton car carried her family and was damaged with bent front springs and frame. Police and ambulances moved Adams to Dr Savage and then Elizabeth General Hospital where he rested quietly.

District Nurse Keeps Westfield Mercy Amid War Demands

Miss MacKenzie the district nurse continues her rounds aiding the sick mothers and babes as war donations rise. The Westfield Nursing Association dues of one dollar a year fund her work and must be paid to treasurer Miss Elizabeth French to sustain relief efforts during the season of turmoil.

Soldier Boys Dance at Dudley Avenue Party

Mrs. G. T. Cruttenden hosted a dance for members of the Second Regiment stationed in New Brunswick at the Westfield Theatre Assembly Hall. The town’s young ladies attended and enjoyed the soldiers who danced to lively music. Large bowls of cold punch attracted the guests. A four piece orchestra provided music.
