High School Boys Penalized For Hazing Incident

Six high school boys faced the Recorder Board for disorderly conduct after hazing adults at the Corbett home. They were fined $20 each or 30 days, sentence suspended. Trustees later suspended their athletics and club activities and ordered work to earn diplomas with readmission on probation after exams.

Commuters And Trains Connect By Daylight Saving Time

Rail schedules adjusted to daylight saving time as New York Elizabeth and many cities adopt the new time. New Jersey municipalities follow DST with minor schedule changes causing trains to depart at times shifted by one hour for commuter convenience.

Fire at Tuttles Mill Causes Minor Shavings Vault Damage

An alarm around 4:30 PM sent the first engine to Tuttles Mill where a fire was found in the shavings vault. The brick wall and roof confined the blaze, with damage totaling $25.00.

Masked Marvel Wins Local Westfield Wrestling Card

The American Legion event drew a full house at Playhouse with 109 ringside seats filled. Promoter Leo Berlow organized the program featuring Jimmie Mastrian vs Charley Kelly in a 30 minute draw, Joe Bonetti vs Young Booth, and Mrs Ortley Winn in jiujitsu. The main bout saw Gus Peterson lose to Granville Mellon the Masked Marvel after an hour of grappling.

Town Board Reports Assessors Work and Objections Hearing Date

The Town Council heard reports from the Board of Assessors on completed town work and property assessments. A public hearing on objections is set for May Std to review improvements on multiple streets and the associated charges to property owners and town at large.

Spring Fete Planned by Woman's Club Committee

The Spring Fete organized by the Special Work Committee of the Woman's Club chaired by Mrs. Lloyd Thompson will be held Tuesday May 10 at 3 30. The event takes place at the properties of Mrs. C V Steinhart and Mrs Percy A Cook on Springfield road with Miss Ruth Doing of New York and her pupils performing rhythmic dancing. Ample car parking is available and transportation is offered at a modest fare by Mr. Schoonover. Tickets are sold by Mrs. Frank Irsch, 1608 Huclid Avenue.

New Panel of Grand and Petit Jurors Named

The selection of jurors for the May term was drawn Monday by Sheriff Johnston at the County Court House in Elizabeth. Westfield grand jurors are Robert H. Sumner and George H. Riley. Petit jurors are Charles Alfen, Robert F. Culbert, Charles H. Griffiths, George C. Hartman, and Benjamin Pothmua.

Fist fight leads to arrests on Elm Street

Officer Somers arrested Martin Keiderling Jr of WElizabeth and Adam Welch of Westfield for a morning fist fight on Elm Street. They were ordered to appear in court this afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Labor rates planned for women workers in homes

The Standardization Committee reports wide support for a wage plan paying 3.00 for 8 hours work plus 40 cents per hour for fractional days, not counting lunch. Many employers have signed, and employment agencies note ample interest from women to work under these terms. Mrs. Steinhart chairs the committee and will accept signatures.

Big Concert for Westfield presents renewed town music

Westfield residents prepare a major concert on May 10 featuring forty local orchestral players under Charles K. Seyfried, assistant conductor of the Strand Orchestra. Proceeds go to the Children's Country Home and the Public School orchestra. many guest musicians from prominent ensembles join the program. Tickets on sale after May 1 at Seyfried's Music Store for reserved seating.

Civics Classes Adjourn With Talk On Government

The Jast Civics Class met Friday in Town Hall as Mrs. F. W. Van Ness of the New Jersey Legislature outlined the National Government with charts. A talk on State Government, omitted from the regular series, will be at the League of Women Voters meeting moved to May 23 at 2 30 p m in Town Hall with the topic Our Community and What We Can Do For It. Also notes a New York receiving station move to 80 Dey Street on May 1 and a shipment routing reminder via Sisser Brothers Express.
