From Ragmy Northern Virginia dated Oct 15 1863 the Enquirer details Lee’s forces advancing from Warrenton into Bristow and Auburn, skirmishes with a full Yankee corps, casualties in Kirkland’s North Carolina brigade, artillery losses, and Meade’s retreat toward Centreville. Stuart’s cavalry and Lee’s infantry push the Union back as rains slow pursuit.
The North Carolina Christaan Conference held its annual session at Gesham for six days. Rev A G Anderson presided and Rev A Apple served as Secretary. Appointments for the coming year covered Dan River Tar River New Hope Cap Fear Middle Creek Moore Deep River Haw River Shallow Ford Union Providence Stokes districts with Beale Anderson, Manning, Longs, Fowler, Ferrell, Bragg, Aussey and others named. Rev J B R Holt named a army missionary. revival of the Christaan Sun discussed with Rev W B Wellens chosen editor.
A late Yankee paper reports Lincoln’s commission of the dead Brig. Gen. Strong and Major General in Morris Island action terms. The Mississippi Clarion calls Strong a thief and villain and notes his death during a Fort Wagner night attack. The Mobile Register and Richmond sources discuss Lincoln’s alleged need for troops and gambling profits in Virginia.
An official telegram from General Wheeler at Missionary Ridge details raids on Calvo s Portford and Mee Minnville with captures of hundreds of prisoners and large stores. It notes destruction of bridges and trains, plus further actions toward Murfreesboro and Shelbyville, as well as prison conditions and improvised local industry reports.
