Romantic Incident of the War Reveals a Soldier Lady

A KnoxvilleChronicle excerpt recounts a Richmond paper tale aboard a train. A pale youth in a Confederate uniform pretends to be a sixteen year old planter, claiming battles in Kentucky and Shiloh with a chest wound, but the woman beside him is Mrs. Clark of Kentucky in disguise seeking vengeance for her husband’s murder. The piece weighs the act as brave yet controversial within war culture. It also quotes Harper’s Weekly on U.S. disadvantages and a Boston arrival note about a potential French recognition of Jefferson Davis’s government and Forey’s promotion.
