Salt Works in Virginia Reported to Gov Vance

Mr Woodfin reports to Gov Vance that 26 000 bushels have been made and sacked with 10 000 on hand. He expects 33 misread lines here for January February. total winter months 100 000 bushels. He assumes 100 000 000 lbs of pork and 100 000 bushels of salt will suffice if hogs are killed one third each month. State may save 50 000 000 more salt if needed. First year aims yield salt for next pork killing season. Salt sold at 150 per bushel, 75 cents to salt well owners, 25 cents to State, manufacturing cost 35 cents. State invested 381 600, Woodfin awaiting return of 6 600 profit reducing investment to 25 000. Daily boiling yields over 100 000 lbs pork saved. 23 to 28 wagons daily. railroad soon for partial supply. Contract by Gov Clark praised. guarantees 300 000 bushels annually during war. Wilmington price cited at 16 per bushel. Fayetteville Observer 19th inst.
