Eight hundred boys and girls are now enrolled in our schools the second week in September. Country teachers complain of small classes in the sixth and fifth grades as the busy season keeps larger pupils out. They fear unfair pacing for early entrants and seek remedies for absent students to catch up.
The county school system notes over 9 percent opening on September 7th and praise for school boards for cleaning and painting buildings. It lists returning teachers, new assignments, and the importance of music programs. Observations include district histories, teacher questions for the first week, and reflections on local cultural notes and past residents.
William C Olson born in Sweden on April 20 1837 arrived in America in 1855 and settled in Knox County Illinois. He served in Company L 1st Illinois Volunteer Infantry from April 1861 enduring guerilla fighting in Missouri and Kentucky and battles at Fort Henry Fort Donelson and Shiloh where he was wounded in the lips. After 1862 he worked in harness and saddlery at Wataga Illinois, later moving to Wa Keeney Kansas in 1870. He held local offices, served as Deputy U S Marshal and state legislator, and was a senior Mason. He died September 4 1914 after paralytic strokes, survived by his wife and three sons. funeral at his home conducted by Rev J F Johnson with Masonic and G A R attendance.
The family extends profound thanks to friends who assisted during their bereavement and especially to the Masonic fraternity and those who sent floral offerings.
Hulda and Mary Hill of eight miles southwest Oakley risked a snake hunt after breakfast returning to the pasture and digging 15 more rattlesnakes from a single hole. The girls killed nine and eight rattled snakes respectively, earning local praise for their pluck in a startling incident reported by Oakley Graphic.
