Sam Shelton and Tom Clifton clashed over wheat straw on Clifton’s land. Shelton and two neighbors arrived with horses to seize the straw when Clifton fired at long range. The men escaped uninjured but Shelton’s horse died after being hit. Clifton surrendered, bonded, and was sent home as a trial was scheduled.
John Samuels born Indiana September 4 1829 moved to Missouri as a child married Elizabeth McClure Williams January 9 1843 died October 22 1913 at daughter Mrs Frank Eaton’s home in Kansas. Survived by seven children with two died in early womanhood. Funeral at Mt Pleasant church near Harper. Interment Mt Hope cemetery in Ellis.
