Destructive cyclone tears through county soil and townships

Last Monday evening a severe cyclone struck sixteen miles south of Wa-Keeney, leveling barns and homes across the Repshire, Lohman, Reece, and Dietz properties. Stock, crops, and furniture were destroyed, with injuries to Mrs Stanton and daughter and one eyewitness recounting extensive damage along the route toward Tom Kutina and neighboring areas. Local residents evacuated to safety, lamenting multiple deaths reported nearby and urging preparation with cyclone cellars.

Tornado Rips Through Ellis and Rocks Counties

A May 22 tornado near Hays killed ten and injured several, sweeping Cadell in Rocks County, with churches, schools and businesses leveled. The storm traveled 35 miles from northwest of Hays, destroying farm buildings and killing livestock. seven listed dead include Alexander Geist family and others near Codell, while George Bahl and family escaped when their house was hurled 400 yards and landed intact. Dozens hurt or missing as damage assessments continue.

Destructive Kansas Tornado Rips Farms and Towns

A severe cyclone struck the Geist and McIntosh farms near Hays causing total losses including a one and two year old injured with multiple fractures. Homes and barns were demolished as residents sought shelter in storm cellars. Sheriff Weltz led rescue and stock roundup efforts while isolated sections reported two inch rain and widespread damage across Osborne county.

Carr Havens Tie In Collyer Kansas Way

George R Carr married Margery Havens at the brides parents home in Collyer Kansas. Officiating was Clarence V Powell. Margery, daughter of L F Haven and new Collyer Lumber manager, worked at Luray post office and studied at Sulan Grove High. George, son of Robert Berr of Rich Hill Missouri, will report to Camp Funston next week after train to Rich Hill. The couple left for their future home aboard train 102 and the note reflects patriotic sacrifice for the country.

Capper’s wartime assistance to Kansas farmers

Governor Capper championed farm rights during wartime, urging price relief, farm labor exemption, and fair railcar distribution. He pressed Washington for exemptions, promoted seed programs, fought profiteering, and backed laws to curb railroad discrimination and protect small shippers and stockmen.

Death of James L. Brown former postmaster of Wa Keeney

James Louis Brown died May 3 at his Clarinda Iowa home after a three week illness. He lived in Wa Keeney from 1887, worked eight years in clothing, served 15 years as Deputy Postmaster there, then five years as Post Master for a total of twenty years in service. A Methodist, he was known for unselfish acts. Survived by wife four children Edith Welch Omaha Neb W C Phillips Clarinda Louis H Varna Tl and Mabel A Omaha Nebr. Hays Normal expects largest summer school

Fort Hays Normal reports rising inquiries for the summer term beginning May 28 1918 with likely record enrollment. The entire area graduating classes will attend, more older students will be present, and extra courses include war public speaking training in war gardening and irrigation farming. Men aged 21 since June 5 1917 must register with Wa Keeney local board on June 5 1918.
