Saddle theft caper ends with sheriff’s capture

A stranger stayed at J N Kulp’s seven miles south of Down and tried to trade for a saddle. The saddle vanished, prompting a warrant. Sheriff Lynn caught the thief near Hays after a chase with a gun pointed at him. The thief escaped briefly but was recaptured and taken to Wright County. Sheriff’s watch was later found missing by the thief, who fled with the mare and saddle before eventual recapture. Sheriff returned with the stolen items and a new pistol, while Billy Nelson became postmaster at a local office. The town questions windmill costs and suggests a gasoline engine for water pumping.
