A fragmentary, archaic poem recounts a border homecoming. The speaker recalls skirmishes, wounds, and a long siege at Lambtonshaw, naming a wife Joan and a wardens’ house. The piece juxtaposes martial duty with domestic ties and a wary, wry resolve to return home with a merry heart.
Theodore Shy, a bashful 36 year old man with good means, seeks a wife and enlists Mrs Ready a witty 25 year old widow to craft his matrimonial note. Through playful questioning she guides him to specify age, appearance and height, while he fumbles and blushes, finally admitting he would marry her if asked, then does.
The largest preserved waterway was taken from the Salt River near Verde mouth. It runs 3.5 miles through an artificial gorge in the Superstition Mountains, then splits into four branches totaling 120 miles. The main canal, 64 feet wide and 12 feet deep, irrigated 1600 square miles toward the Gila, now with ruins indicating a vanished teeming population.
A playful exchange centers on how to spell whisky or whiskey with references to Kentucky and Indianapolis. The joke riffs on local pride and the phonetic quirks of place names, ending with a quip about Potts and Jograal.
