A fragmented wartime column discusses new words from conflicts, hints of patriotism, and wartime vocab. It urges knitted garments, hospital supplies, and volunteers to turn in work promptly. It also notes service flags, Canteen Service rules, and subscription prompts for the World.
Locust Club held its annual Guest Day at Mrs. GC. R. Hille home on Washington's birthday with patriotic decor, a fish dinner, and a Red Cross donation. Dr. Earnest J. Powell delivered a Winter Lecture at Garden Theater praised as brilliant and heart stirring. An oat and barley smut demonstration via new Dry Treatment will be given in Wa Keeney on March 5 at 2 pm by a USDA specialist to help farmers cut a Kansas loss of about a million dollars annually.
Obituary records describe Samantha E. Blakely of Grant County Wisconsin born November 1 1859 married to John W Blakely in 1877 mother of six with deep church ties and family devotion dying February 20 near Ogallah Kansas. Also notes the death of Frank Cross of Glencoe township born April 5 1851 in North Carolina who moved to Trego county in 1881 and died after arsenic poisoning a funeral led by Rev J A Westerman at Ellis with interment in Ellis cemetery.
State Guard notes describe Company A adding a twelve piece band and plans for a company fund funded by 50 cent monthly dues. A guard armory is set in Trego County Bank basement. Also listed are pupils with perfect attendance across grades one to eight, naming many students by full names.
Farmers urged to start or summarize farm business accounts to aid income tax reporting. R E McCall State Farm Management Demonstrator will help at 10 am and 2 pm on March 9, answering tax related questions. W A Boys District Agricultural Agent invites all interested to attend.
