Gilbert of Fillmore had 440,300 votes, earning the second Missouri prize. The Savannah candidate’s supporters praised her and Savannah for the top vote total, the largest ever in a Gazette contest. The winner is remembered as a former assistant postmistress during boom days and receives World readers’ congratulations.
