Several frame buildings were consumed by fire in Junction City last week. The report notes property loss, details of the blaze, and insurance estimates, reflecting a serious setback for local business owners.
A Rush Center woman, Mrs Hutt, 27s mother-in-law to a local restaurant owner, was killed when crossing the tracks as a westbound C W railroad train from Great Bend neared 1 PM. The engineer attempted to stop but struck her at speed, throwing her 25 feet. No fault found with the railroad. efforts to revive her failed. Also mentioned: Ed Chalk fell through ice while preparing for baptisms last Sunday.
Capt P W Hey of Farnsworth was shot by Jacob Carroll in a Farnsworth store last Sunday evening. Five bullets struck Hey, with non fatal wounds reported to his hands shoulder and abdomen. Carroll claimed self defense. Hey had confronted Carroll over his attentions to Hey's daughter. Carroll was bailed for February 4 preliminary trial amid lynching talks.
The interior department orders survey and platting of abandoned military reservations under the 1884 act to prepare them for appraisal and sale. About 700,000 acres across multiple states and territories, including Fort Dodge and Fort Wallace in Kansas, are to be offered as early as possible. Over fifty reservations are part of the 1200 acres remaining in the Fort Dodge military reservation.
