Dr. D W King president of the Wenatchee Commercial club endorses a commission model for second and third class cities with a $3000 mayor salary. The plan would replace the council with a mayor clerk and treasurer as a governing commission and include recall by petition to remove unfaithful officials.
Polls open 11 a m to 8 p m with returns expected by midnight as Chelan County voters weigh Poindexter against Burke and Atkinson. Estimated total votes near 2600 with Poindexter predicted to lead among 1800 Republicans and 800 Democrats.
About midnight on Saturday 14 freight cars broke loose from an east bound freight on the Wellington sidetrack. They jumped the switch at Windy Point and plunged 1000 feet into the gulch, derailing and tearing out telegraph lines. No lives were lost though property damage is expected to be heavy. Trackage near Horseshoe tunnel sustained major damage.
Word reached Mrs. Harvey Mills that her father N. P. Frisbie lost his right arm while working in a Bellingham mill. No further details were available. Frisbie was well known locally for operating a harness shop for several years.
A $57,500 portion of a $170,000 shipment from Fairbanks to Seattle vanished en route aboard the Humboldt. One end of the wooden strongbox was cut, revealing lead ingots where gold should be. Detectives have no leads and compare the case to a 4 year old heist by night watchman Bobby Miller.
Frank Jungers was arrested in Leavenworth last week for selling liquor to two Indians. He pleaded guilty on Saturday and was arraigned. Judge Grimshaw sentenced him to three months in the county jail, cautioning that a repeat offense could bring up to two years in the state penitentiary. B. J. Williams had been appointed as his counsel, who chose not to fight.
Building committee secretary Mrs L M Mull states rumors of halted work and a sale are unfounded. She confirms no authority for such statements and that construction continues at full pace. Also notes planned post election trip to Mexico by Dick Lillis Bert Courtnay and other locals Burns Yo cum and H A Chapin may join.
R E Simons visiting the area from Chelan and Entiat countries reports plentiful bear in the Entiat headwaters and Chelan mountains. Local hunters pursue bears as Chelan plans a barbecue late this month and hopes to secure a large silver tip from the upper Entiat.
Mr and Mrs V L Bowman of Los Angeles traveled to Ellensburg and Seattle by 30 hp Buick after three months on the road from Spokane. They plan business in Ellensburg and British Columbia before returning to California, enjoying a leisurely journey with few difficulties.
Miss Blanche Sheffield purchased the old Frank Rogers Jr. place at the Douglas and Idaho corner for about $3,000. The sale was handled by the Great Western Realty Company.
After an illness of one day, 11 month old Esther Metzger daughter of Mr and Mrs Lyman R Metzger of East Wenatchee died Sunday evening from cholera infantum. The funeral was at 3 this afternoon at the church and she was buried in the Dunkard cemetery East Side with Wenatchee Undertaking Company in charge.
Lewis Linsen of Minden Nebraska is visiting the home of V. L. and I. E. Garner, staying as a guest.
Word spread that Walter M. Olive offered 500 dollars on Judge Burke's election. A taker appeared but Olive reportedly quickly backed away from the wager.
At about 10 o’clock this morning John Moore died after a brain clot followed a prior operation for a growth near his jaw. He had lived on the Pogue ranch for two years working on shares and leaves a wife and family.
At least 12 laborers were killed and 10 injured when an overhanging section of Bergen hill rock collapsed at the western mouth of the old Erie tunnel. Ten more workers were in the hospital. The Erie railroad has been carving an open cut through Bergen hill to reach its passenger trains.
Two guardsmen were killed and two seriously injured with about a dozen lightly hurt when a Big Four train transporting Kentucky National Guardsmen to Fort Harrison wrecked. Editor J. D. Cornelius of the Cashmere Record reports the vote in the precinct center around 375, with the main contest between Thomas H. Atkinson and Judge J. H. Chase and Poindexter expected to garner two thirds of the vote.
Percy Walker returned last evening around five with his Buick after a four week Sound country trip. He traveled with his daughter Marie and Miss Lilian Vaughn, joined by Miss Cora Davidson of Seattle, with only about 35 miles over Cascade mountains by rail. The tour included Vancouver and British Columbia and showcased the car’s performance and service.
State highway engineer Kaupp reports in Ellensburg that the Monitor to Ellensburg route is impractical due to grade over 5 percent. He favors a Colockum route using the old freight road, noting altitude reductions and a 700 foot lower profile than Monitor South. A Squillicuhck option may be tested with engineering work funded by county authority, potential state aid for construction if approved.
