Underground water supply proves vital for railroad needs
The Burlington railroad drilled a deep well after geologist N H Darton predicted underground water in the Deadwood formation. Water at 2920 to 2980 feet yielded half a million gallons daily at 75 pounds pressure, with 122 degree water quality. A later contamination issue led to casing to isolate the source, illustrating the value of federal underground water studies. 8 O Jayne of the U S Irrigation Dept visited for well data and farmer surveys on wells, wells depth, water amount, pump and windmill sizes, soil and crop details. A separate sobering accident near Quiner left a two year old dead while playing near an outhouse with a hammer on the roof.
