A boiler explosion and fire at Charles Shont lithographic plant leaves many unaccounted. Police warn initial 75 death claim may be inflated and debris is blocking the building, with 10 to 15 confirmed dead and numerous injuries being removed by ambulances.

Honolulu reports the Matatutu volcano on Savaii in Samoa has erupted violently, piling up 3000 feet and covering 30 square miles. A lava stream 12 miles wide runs into the sea, throws up to 1200 feet, and locals flee. The eruption began August 21 and was felt 80 miles away, flattening nearby London Missionary Society buildings.
