The Inspector Problem Again

The state faces a funding crisis for the fruit inspector program as no funds remain to pay the Special Horticultural Inspector. Darlington is advised by the Commissioner of Horticulture to explain the situation to county commissioners and seek local guarantees to continue service, with salaries charged to counties and later reimbursed by the state.

A Sister Wedding Celebrates Twenty-Fifth Anniversary

The twenty-fifth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. William Ulrey was celebrated December 7 at their south side home. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. John Elfers, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fuller, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nelson and son, Mr. and Mrs. Alrey and daughters Katie and Vida, and Mrs. Jesse Williams and son Ralph of Seattle.

Reservoir Cleaning Report Denies Plague of Filth

The water commissioner states the reservoir held sand from one to three feet deep after a washout event. Three-fifths of the sand was removed, with no impurities found. Sand enters the system through pipes and will continue to do so, with plans to resume cleaning in spring to aid water supply from the Columbia River. The city faces fire risk without extra supply for several days.

Examination Passes and Teacher Certification Totals

Out of 893 applicants in November, 562 passed and received papers. Among them 187 raised grades, 67 earned state accredited normal diplomas, nine renewed first grade certificates, 55 permanent first grade certificates for 90 months experience including 36 in Washington. Of the 562 certificates, 144 are first grade, 203 second grade, 215 third grade. 123 applicants had no teaching experience. 35 show no experience.

Foreman shot during hold up at Ellensburg

William Hanson, foreman at a Milwaukee camp, was shot and killed by armed robbers at Ellensburg on Thursday. The incident spurs local calls for tighter surveillance of floaters arriving from Puget Sound this season. Washington lumbermen arrive to testify in a case seeking higher lumber rates eastward from the Pacific Northwest. Ten mill workers from Washington and ten from Oregon coast towns are present. E. H. Council Meets Tonight in Regular Session

The city council will convene in regular session tonight. L. V. Stetson of Seattle is staying at the Great Northern. The Ladies Guild of the Episcopal Church will meet tomorrow at 2 30 p.m. with Mrs. McGuin on Orondo avenue.
