Brewster Hero Rescues Drowning Man From Columbia River

Frank Brewer of Brewster saved rancher Scott from a watery death in the Columbia River after Scott fell overboard and became entangled in an oarlock. Brewer grasped the drowning man and pulled him into a boat as others assisted. The incident prompted praise from the Columbia steamer crew and sparked calls for a gold medal for Brewer.

State Training School in Chehalis Praised for Reformative Work

Reform school in Chehalis known as the State Training School. Since 1891 it has admitted 1125 boys and 345 girls and now houses 174 boys and 35 girls. About 75 to 80 percent of discharged youths become honest, productive citizens. Superintendent Charles Reed and wife lead a humane program with strong teaching in basic academics, trades, stenography, and music.

Bridge Crew Resumes Work on Columbia River Span

A Seattle crew arrived by train to restart construction on the big highway bridge across the Columbia. They will reestablish false work, with steel framing to begin in ten days to two weeks under Inspector A L Preston. Expect a large crew on both river banks within two weeks, aiming for completion and travel readiness in about three months.

Pear harvest near finish at Canal Company ranch

R N Bradford, manager, brought in the final pear load to town on Saturday. He had estimated 1170 boxes three weeks earlier, but the packed total was 1150. About 1140 boxes were sold to Wenatchee Produce Company from three acres of orchard with trees aged three to six years.

Big Washout in the Palouse Affects Rail Service

A major washout in the Palouse between Spokane and Pasco near Ritzville disrupted Northern Pacific rail traffic. Trains must use Great Northern routes to Spokane and Wenatchee, with service not expected to resume on NP tracks for some time. Also notes irrigation congress interest in Sacramento and personnel changes at the Brewster Herald and nearby papers.

Man on trial for murder as Superior Court convenes

In a somber session, the Superior Court opened with No L Davis on trial for his life. Jurors were difficult to empanel due to objections to capital punishment. Davis appeared pale and anxious as his defense team and the prosecuting attorney Henry Cross prepared for the case.
