Brawn Beat Steam in Early Steam Fire Engine Trial
In New York during the 1850s volunteers clung to hand engines and challenged Latta to a public steam trial in City Hall Park. On February 9 1855 both engines sprayed water with distinct nozzles. The hay wagon reached 189 feet. Latta’s steam engine 182 feet. Crowds watched as the two engines clashed atop the city hall dome and New York prevailed amid loud applause.
