Bids for the Harlin Block are in and contracts will be signed next week. The three story building will house hotel and lodging spaces on the second and third floors, with excavation and foundation completed earlier and construction set to start soon on adjoining lots.
Waterville’s two banks show deposits totaling close to 6 million dollars. The Waterville Savings Bank, organized six years ago, lists C. T. Hansen as president and Geo. Kincaid as vice president. Geo. P. Wiley is cashier with E. C. Carter and Robt. Whittier as assistants. The Douglas County Bank, oldest between Spokane and Seattle, organized in 1890, names J. G. Kennedy as president Harmon Wilcox as vice president M. E. Lies as cashier and D. E. Fletcher as assistant.
Harry H. L. Cohn brother of Joe Cohn and stockholder in the Spokane Indians arrived to train with the team. He has practiced law in Spokane and will devote time to baseball. He recalls Fairbanks Alaska district attorney days when midnight games outdid the Twilight league by three hours.
The Catholic church will celebrate Solemn High Mass next Sunday at 10 30 a m It repeats the Easter Sunday service due to popular request The Waterville priest will preach replacing Father Van de Walle at this service
Few residents welcome the new timetable on the Mansfield branch of the Great Northern line. The Mansfield Commercial club urged restoration of the former schedule claiming it allows same day trips to Waterville and avoids overnight stays, while freight congestion from Leavenworth to Ephrata and Wenatchee to Mansfield backs up trains daily.
Cashmere high school basketball visits Wenatchee as schedule shows a game today while Cashmere schools are closed this week for spring vacation.
The Wenatchee old settlers held a nostalgia filled gathering last night re creating the square dances of pioneer days. Veterans like Dan Shafer and Mrs Reed recalled early arrivals and the 1880s sheriffs race while younger attendees joined in the merriment. The event stretched past 2 AM with trains looming, and local families from Cashmere and Monitor were noted among attendees. More out of town members may attend next year as the ball becomes a historic memory for the region.
Ernest Lever Yates, born August 2, 1882, was found dead in bed last night at about 11 p.m. at the C. B. Reed ranch four and a half miles below Malaga. He was last seen in good health, spoke with his mother at noon, slept at 8 p.m., and was discovered cold and stiff about three hours later. The body rests at Wenatchee Undertaking parlors morgue. Interment is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday from Sunny slope church with Rev. A. B. Peters officiating.
G A Longanecker, former local theatre manager, signs on as Twilight league umpire for the coming season. A noted semi professional pitcher in the Inland Empire, he saw little playing time last year.
Electrical signs are being installed along the avenue each week with several more planned for merchants and theatre men. The new sign installed today will light the entrance to the Pastime Pool Parlor tonight.
Wheat raisers along the Mans field branch of the Great Northern road near Douglas and Waterville show net profit increases of 25 to 33 percent over prior years. Prices last year ranged 80 cents to $1.06 per bushel versus 75 to 90 cents the year before, with 5 cents per bushel gain in Waterville marketing and 10 cents saved per bushel near Douglas due to rail service. About 10 percent of last year’s crop remains unsold, Waterville Milling holds 50,000 bushels in stock, and prospects for next year point to a record crop with larger acreage.
In observance of the eight hour day anniversary, about 300000 bituminous miners nationwide walk off the job as wage contracts expire. In Indiana and Ohio unions press for 5.55 percent per ton raises, while Kansas City reports nearly no miners at work amid claims of non lockout and continued contracted terms.
The Presbyterian church reports about $5,000 handled by Treasurer Alex Murray over the last year with expenditures across current costs missions and societies. New members, pastor duties, and a salary raise to 1,800 plus manse are noted alongside elections of elders and trustees and a gold headed cane gift to Murray.
Grand Chancellor C. V. Savage of Olympia will visit the Valley lodge, Knights of Pythias, on the 18th. No initiation will be performed during his stay and the full visit program has not yet been finalized.
Frank A. Triplett sues the Great Northern for 25000 in federal court at Spokane. He was injured last December at Leavenworth when trapped between two engines while attempting to couple them. Triplett, an engine hustler, contends the railroad bears responsibility for his injury. The railroad claims contributory negligence for his decision to enter the space between the engines and staying there without notifying the train engineer.
Four county jail inmates were discharged to permanent homes with three sent to Monroe and one to Walla Walla, marking the completion of their confinement.

The United States land cases involving numerous homesteads in the district are postponed indefinitely. Many will be decided by the land office without trial, while a larger number await postponement. Seven of eleven special agents nationwide have been dropped.
James D. Hoge says the state central committee will convene in Seattle at 2 PM on April 27 at the Butler hotel. Thomas E. Bollman of Cashmere has not been officially notified as a county member amid expected insurgent activity and a possible move to set convention dates for non primary offices.

The transcontinental lines have resumed delivering empty freight cars to Seattle and the northwest after February snow Closings. Great Northern Seattle yards have received empties from the east all week and are placing them for shippers. Demand for cars is exceptionally heavy and delayed Seattle freight is cleared by agents of the four lines.
The Mansfield train did not depart until about 11 30 this morning because the engine was dead. The delay caused inconvenience for several passengers who wished to make the return trip today.
County commissioners will convene in regular session Monday to transact a broad agenda of business items and official actions.

Ben Spear of the Douglas County Press installs a Mer Genthaler linotype machine in Waterville, costing nearly $4,000 including metal and fixtures. Earlier J G Tuttle added a Junior linotype to the Big Bend Empire office. Waterville now has two such machines, a pace few Northwest towns match.
Wenatchee high school seniors present Esmeralda directed by Prof. P E Ward with Ernest Lake Lydia Ann Rogers Jessie Lewis and Edna Browning in a drama about wealth and love facing moral themes. Cast includes Elbert Rogers Lydia Ann Rogers Minnie Walsh Jack Desmond Geoffrey Hyatt and John Deitch.
Minneapolis April 1. An increase of 3 cents an hour in the pay of switchmen is officially announced today by the Northwestern roads to begin April 1.
A marriage license was issued to Marcus H. Sheppard of Wenatchee and Miss Gertie M. Rice of Paintsville, Iowa.
Twenty farmers on Quincy Flat plan to hire locally as Wenatchee reports labor scarcity. Secretary Coburn says 200 workers needed in Wenatchee today while Quincy offers $40 monthly plus board for unskilled orchard labor, $2.50 daily in construction, and $6 with a team. Laborers, tradesmen, and teamsters are in demand. clerks are not.

Agent Baker announces the Great Northern Express will stop free delivery within the business district effective April 1. No reason given, but business men may protest. the move is expected to be temporary as they weigh the impact.
Special Agent A. J. Leonard of the land department has been in the Okanogan country for several days. He previously served as stenographer to Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt and is in the area on government business.
The Lamb-Davis mill at Leavenworth started last Monday and is employing about 200 men though not yet at full force.
Mount Etna continues to erupt with thirty active craters as authorities order evacuations for outer Belasso and Nicolosi districts. Many residents refuse to leave while Frank A. Perrett, Brooklyn geologist, predicts the eruption may last six months and be the most serious in history.

Philadelphia reports five street cars dynamited with windows shattered but no injuries. Rewards of 500 dollars offered for arrests of anyone placing explosives on tracks. Police deny parade permit for women sympathizers with preparations continuing. New York notes pilots and towboat masters strike reducing harbor activity as pay and hours disputes continue. Chicago sees a thousand painters and decorators strike for a five cent hourly raise with a potential broader walkout.
Local railroad workers report an arbitration board agreement with the firemen on most issues, with wage terms remaining the main hurdle. A satisfactory wage settlement is anticipated, averting a strike on the Hill lines.
