Wellington Times and Gisborne influence praised by NSA W director

Mr. Lloyd Sommerlad, secretary of the NSA County Press Association, spoke in a Town and Country Magazine session on country newspapers. He selected Wellington, Glen Innes, and Kempsey for discussion, highlighting the Wellington Times as a chronicler of the town’s growth from a convict stockade to a flourishing centre of 5,006 people. He noted Oxley’s 1817 discovery, the town’s Edinburgh-like street plan, and historic landmarks such as the Duke of Wellington’s name in local places and a Dover clock kept in the council chamber.
