Marshman Elected Mayor of Wellington in Special Council

Ald A P Marshman was elected Mayor at a special Wellington Municipal Council meeting on Tuesday night. Ald D V Roddy was re elected Deputy Mayor for a second term, and the council fixed the mayoral allowance at £100. Several aldermen were named to committees including Finance, Park and Gardens, and Works with Marshman serving ex officio on each.

Amalgamation Proposal Sparks Council Worries

Wellington council to improve baths ahead of Boxing Day carnival

Wellington Municipal Council will clear the tower at the baths remove unsafe top portions and arrange painting and other improvements before the Amateur Swimming Club carnival on Boxing Day. They will hire a contractor and supply paint for clubroom work while considering inviting Olympic star Capifia for a future Wellington exhibition.

The Times will suspend publication for four issues in line with industrial awards and resume bi weekly on Monday January 10 1949. A skeleton office stall will operate to conduct business on all days except public holidays during the shutdown period.

Question on Burrendong Dam work and Mumbil water supply

The member asks whether preparatory work on Burrendong Dam has started and if the railway terminal will be in Mumbil. He asks if the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission plans premises there for staff and a Bell River pipeline to supply water for employees. Fire in Percy Street home causes clothing loss

A fire in Mr. E. J. Cullen’s Percy Street house Tuesday afternoon damaged a bedroom wall and destroyed clothing. Wellington Fire Brigade officers quickly extinguished the blaze with a garden hose. A hot copper flue fed the wooden wall, and clothes on the wall burned. Captain T. Masterson and officers attended the fire.

Wellington district harvest yields 1 380 000 bushels

Harvest nearing completion shows Wellington district wheat expected around 1 380 000 bushels with over 700 000 delivered before Christmas. Muronbung silos received 177 000 bushels and 25 000 bags. overall quality rated excellent with 81 82 pounds per bushel. total district deliveries reach 3 801 000 bushels as silos and depots report ongoing receipts and post Christmas deliveries planned if needed.

Retorts for Wellington Gas Works Ready for Dispatch

Mesars Wellings and Company inform the Wellington Council that new retorts are ready and will be sent when shipping space becomes available. The Council has waited over a year for the equipment expected to significantly improve gas supply for the summer. The Boy Scouts Association Wellington branch asks watering of trees at Scout Hall grounds during summer recess, a request granted to beautify the area. Main Roads Review and Local Council Actions

Council discussed a forthcoming Wellington review of main roads with the Divisional Engineer and acting Chief Engineer, planning a meeting next year.
