Gladioli Show Champion Trophy Awarded to Mr R McAlister

The successful Gladioli show crowned Mr R McAlister of Zonch Street as champion with his entry Pheardy a pink shrimp variety. He received the TLHLA Flanagan Cup for the exhibit amid praise for novice section entries and overall strong flower quality. The Mayor Ald J M Whiteley opened the show and praised exhibitors and society officials. Judges were C J Kimbell and T N Ayling who delivered capable decisions.

Fire brigade called out at Barsey Murray home

A fire brigade responded to a blaze at Cis borne Street where burning rubbish ignited nearby scantlings. There were no adjacent buildings but a dry paddock posed a further risk as flames spread toward nearby provisions. Captain led the response.

Heat wave hits record highs with rising temps across days

The report notes the hottest day since January 22 with 101 degrees. Temperatures climbed over five or six days to reach a peak on Friday. Clouds reduced rainfall Saturday and winds brought a dust streak. Two points of runoff were recorded.

T K Shaw and seven staff run the intake amid rodent and frost losses, totaling an anticipated 300 000 bushels. Mills report 255 000 total, with McLeod's flour mill receiving 196 000 so far. Agricultural officials say state yield may fall short of 73 million bushels.

Welcome to New Salvation Army Captain and Family

A warm welcome greeted Captain and Mrs. Albert Bolly at the Salvation Army Hall on Friday night as they replace Captain and Mrs. L Rees who left for duties at Goulburn. The couple and their four children were welcomed in prayer by Rev. E A Walsham. Also present were Miss B Cuneen and Mrs Norman Johns. Wheat deliveries to the mill reached 130000 bushels with a further 20000 expected before harvest, and manager Mr A Harvey anticipates about 150000 bushels for the district. Captain Holly’s previous posting was at Bathurst and he has been recuperating in the Bow district.

Bakery Robbery Suspected Expert Cracker Team

Police say a crackamen likely carried out a careful break in at the bakery rear by smashing a panel and opening a Yale lock. The burglars moved to the front, lifted a table from the safe, dragged the safe amid flour bags, and blew the bolts with dynamite. The safe and cash box were opened and money taken. The till yielded little. Det Sgt Burke, and Detectives Fagan Wild Smith, with local officers, lead the inquiry. Investigations continue.

Liberal nominees contest Lawson seat in Dunedoo meeting

In a Dunedoo gathering Liberal delegates considered candidates for the Lawson seat. Darey Walker and 3 F B Cumen of Granville were withdrawn from the nine-person list while Croft emerged as a strong contender with extensive public service. Other contenders and delegates from Wellington, Dubbo and Orange attended and weighed the field.

Council seeks to prepare Taff Wicket despite pitch danger

Municipal Council plans a determined effort to ready Taff Wicket for play in the New Year but will first consult Cricket Association officials. Joint Conference Decides on Cricket Pitch Prep Plan

On Friday the Mayor Ald J M Whitley and council members met with Wellington and District Cricket Association officials at RGate Park to push water and fertiliser on the pitch for growth. They pledged to have the surface ready for play in about three weeks despite rejecting a reduction in the £2 weekly charge.
