Moore Murder Trial Due for Jury Wednesday

In Wellington, the capital murder trial of David Moore opened in 100th District Court and was expected to go to the jury on Wednesday. State witnesses include cafe patrons Johnny Nash and Joe Kilgore, plus law officers and a doctor relating a fatal shooting outside Johnny Nash Cafe on April 5, 1975.

Cooper-Woodruff Wins Abra FM Road Contract in Texas

Cooper and Woodruff of Amarillo won the bid to complete a 6 mile gap on Abra FM Road 3143 at a State Highways and Public Transportation Commission meeting in Austin. The bid was 347 467.38 dollars, about 36.5 percent under engineers estimates. Construction will start after October 1 and likely continue through winter with paving planned next spring.

County Records Rising Screwworm Cases This Summer

Collingsworth County reports five confirmed screwworm cases in cattle across the county with two more in the past week at Tom Wilson Ranch and Pat O'Hair Farm. Other affected herds include Travis McGuire and Palo F. Cummings at Buck Creek. County Agent Don Reeves urges residents to bring any maggots or worms found on land to the screwworm lab at Mission for testing.

Rockets Ready for Canadian Wildcats

Wellington Skyrockets host the Canadian Wildcats on Friday October 1 at 8:00 pm in a home game before district play. Coach James Williams says the Rockets must rebound after a loss to Childress as Canadian shows a strong wishbone offense and quick backs with solid defense. Canadian enters with a 3 1 record and is praised for executing a Panhandle level offense.

Annual Soil Conservation Tour Set for Thursday in Wellington Area

The 20th NW Texas Research Demonstration program milestone will be noted at the Thursday tour starting 9:00 a.m. on the courthouse south side. Four stops include Thomason farm for cotton tests and Nix, Bartlett, Lewis farms for grain sorghum and waterway studies. A barbecue at Ellison Park closes the event with Extension Service experts from Vernon and Amarillo discussing results.

County Educator T E Lennon Dies in Collingsworth County

T E Lennon of Dodson Texas and Oklahoma educator for 44 years died in Collingsworth General Hospital at 3 50 a m Friday September 24 at age 74 He served as mayor of Dodson for a third term and as county superintendent in two counties He retired from the Collingsworth post January 15 1972 Lennon taught and administered schools through a long career with his wife and children also in teaching.

Boosters to Decide on Activity Bus

The Skyrocket Booster Club will decide at its next meeting on October 5 whether to buy an activity bus for Wellington High School students. The 7:30 p.m. meeting, at the Farm Bureau Building, will present bus type details and financing, and is open to nonmembers.

Bloodmobile Visit Sets Donation Drive in Wellington

The Red Cross Bloodmobile from Wichita Falls arrives in Wellington on Tuesday October 12, with a goal of collecting 118 units. Blood hours run 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Burn Handley Community Center as local clubs join the effort led by Mrs. Ernest Harwell and the Wellington Women’s Club plus Young Homemakers and Senior Citizens groups. The drive aims to bolster Collingsworth County blood supply for Collingsworth General Hospital.

City revives Marian Airpark funding push for FAA aid

Mayor Bill Hatch announced a new federal funding application for Marian Airpark with two FAA representatives scheduled to speak at the Wellington Kiwanis Club. City officials hope to use existing environmental studies to shorten approval time while awaiting final paperwork from engineer Bill McMonies.

Library Friends Plan Book Sale Monday

The Friends of the Library will hold a book sale Monday October 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If weather allows it will be outside at the house otherwise inside at the county library. Proceeds go to Collingsworth County Library improvements with donations welcomed.
