Texas CHIP cuts hit thousands of children statewide
The 78th Texas Legislature reduced CHIP eligibility, ending coverage for over 169,000 Texas children by 2005 and cutting more than 760 million dollars in state and federal funds. The change removes many services, raises premiums, imposes an asset test, and introduces a 90 day waiting period for new applicants, with further reductions and cost shifts impacting counties including King and Harris.
